Companies have realized the importance of involving users in creating products and services that they will use in future. Hence there has been a growing need to reach out to the right audience and interact with them on independent or controlled platforms.
New Web Technologies have enabled users to connect with the product owners and voice their opinion about the product. But SMM is not just about gathering feedback or delivering product knowledge. Its also a new form of 1 on 1 interaction with your target audience without the interference of 3rd parties like advertising agents etc. If users like something they will talk about it either by sharing it with their friends on Facebook, twitter or recommending it on You tube, slideshare etc. and eventually will reach a larger audience who become your potential customers.
But its not as easy as said above. For users to like something they have to find the product useful or experiential. How do we ensure this happens:
How does SMM start?
The reason why its called Integrated Social Media marketing is that, the elements which will allow easier online marketing are thought of from the very beginning of product design. Features like Vote, rate, comment, share etc. allow users to recommend or talk about the product. Hence SME does not happen independent of the product but is closely integrated with the product.
How will they find us?
Perhaps the biggest CONCERN.. SME strategy uses a combination of various channels or techniques to ensure that your target audience can find you. Search engine optimization, google buzz, facebook, twitter, blogs, linkedin, flickr, youtube, slideshare etc. But another question that you need to address is, Why will they come back? Users will come back for more content that they like, or would like to be a part of, they need something to talk about hence to keep the BUZZ going Product owners need to put together a good content strategy.
What will Users talk about?
An effective "Content Strategy" drives SMM. What will users talk about? The discussions points do not usually come from the users, they have to be driven by the product owner. For e.g. forums.. product owners anticipate a few topics that might interest the users and start discussions on them. This also helps users identify what they would like to talk about. This also gives out a message that we are concerned about your problems and want to offer a platform where you could connect with others or us to look for answers.
Similary for some products having a micro portal dedicated to customer interactions might make more sense. What users are looking for are quick answers to their questions and that too from reliable sources.
But quite obviously different products would call for different content strategies. Games, applications, portals, Blogs, videos etc could become part of your Content Strategy.How do we measure the effectiveness: Every strategy has to generate results. At the end of the day it has to get you users you want. Hence measurability is a key component. We use tools and techniques which help us track user interactions and conversions. Based on which we modify the SMM process to generate better results.
