EVI’s User Experience Research Process
June 24th, 2010Graphic Design is not UX Design
April 20th, 2010Recent few queries sort of inspired me to clarify this…. changing the look and feel will not change the User Experience. User Experience is not just one thing, its a combination of good workflow, architecture which includes information hierarchy, usability and graphic design. Please note graphic design is one of the elements and not the element. What is UI then? User Interface is a set of controls that you give the user to operate the application/software/product. It is a layer on top of the architecture of the product. These controls can be arrived at, after the designer has decided what would be the different screens and how would they be linked together. UI changes may or may not affect the architecture.
Graphic Design enhances the look and feel of these UI elements. So one without the other cannot change the User Experience of the product.
Workflows are most critical in enhancing the user experience. Series of steps to achieve a task defines a workflow. A good UI links these workflows together seamlessly.
So if you looking for a change in User experience, you should be prepared to relook at everything that forms a part of the product.
EVI’s New Identity
March 19th, 2010East Village has come a long way since it was started and it was high time we designed a logo that suited our vision and mission….
The new logo carries the essence of the fact that we design for USERS. We have constantly been talking about how products which are not user centric and when I say centric I mean both USEFUL and EASY to USE, fail. Hence we decided that our new logo will have a bit of both “the rising sun” and an “empowered user”. After about 20 odd designs we finally selected this one. Hope you guys like it and continue to support EVI like you always have.

Planning for Web based Startups
January 5th, 2010A typical mistake that I have seen a lot of startups make is, “start development” first without a cohesive “Blueprint”.
A “Blueprint” for a web bases service should comprise of detailed wireframes (a term used for grayscale diagrams) of each and every page that a user will go through in order to complete the task that you plan to launch. But is this enough? No, not at all. Unless you test these wireframes, you will not know that the workflow that you have deisgned for the user will work exactly the way you want it to. Is the user following the prescribed path or are they getting distarcted with some other element on the page? is the workflow too long? By compirmising on the number of steps would you be comprimising on the usablity? Etc. etc. are the questions that one needs to address with usability testing.
So, why dont we launch the service and then test it with live audience?
How many times have you been to a portal or subscribed to a service which had a tedious workflow? even though you tried it once, did you go back?
Testing on live audience might make sense to some but think about the cost of acquisition of a user…now thats something that will help you take a call.
Hence we believe that its important to know what you want to deliver to your end user and start develeopment based on that.

Mobikwik @ World Usability Day
December 7th, 2009Sunali Aggarwal, UX Lead @Mobikwik.com, spoke at the World Usability Day, Gurgaon, organised by Make My Trip.com.
Her Presentation emphasised on the importance of Smarter systems. Designers need to think and design smarter systems which save costs for both a user and a business. These systems need to bring about a change in user’s lifestyle and should also be able to make the industry think of more innovative services and business models.
What do we mean by a System?
We all exist or are a part of a system. A small change in the basic element of a larger system forces the entire system to react or change as the situation may be. This has been seen over a period of time and throughout the history of product design and innovation. An activist can influence a group and a group can influence a change in the country’s perception.
Similarly, design brings about a change in its own way. It simplifies lifestyle, reduces hassel and tries to make products more experimental and convenient. A simple online bill payment for electricity makes life easier for people, they can avoid wasting time standing in long queues, also avoid rude or uncalled for interaction with our public sector employees, etc. etc.
A small system such as this makes us (user/consumers) demands more online systems where they could do similar stuff.
But building such services is not enough. Service owners have started thinking about the users more than they used to. They extend services or lets say concern before and after a user/consumer’s buy’s something on their portal. A simple example would be portals like Make My Trip, where extensive product information helps user to transact. But before a user can buy or book, they can also in a way plan their entire trip, which in turn makes it easier for them book tickets, accordingly.
After the transaction, their information is stored automatically and they can retrieve this anytime they want to. Similarly, things like cancellation etc. is also very easy or hassle free.
What does this say about change in service models?
Unless, businesses show more sensitivity towards users they will not be able to retain them. There is enough competition out there. But users will buy from sites which make them feel comfortable. Such services also need to make users feel important to the businesses, irrespective of how much the spend.
A smarter product or service should resolve user’s need or should have a purpose. It should be extremely usable so that its easily adaptable by user, with minimum change how they perform a task in the physical world. At the same time, it should be easier than it is for a user in the real world. A product or service can be termed smarter when it engages the user, lie nintendo-uil or an i-phone. Last but not the least, innovation in the service models is very important.
Teaching is learning
December 7th, 2009My recent experience with teaching has been an eye opener. I didn’t know that I knew a few things about design. Its also helping me figure out how to improve the things the way we currently do them. I am revisiting the whole design process. I also realised that if the process is correct the output would automatically shape up and will be closer to the objective. The course is an introduction to interaction Design. Students are in their 5th Semester. I realised that most of us are capable but we are not given enough exposure to understand our capabilities. I am not sure how the education system would like to address this problem. Logic is not something you need to acquire any right or score in an entrance exam. It should be encouraged and embedded into our system from the very beginning. I don’t think that mathematics will solve this problem but more and more techniques to work on a child’s observation skills could help. If we can inherit a lot of subtle traits from our parents that too subconciously, with more practice and efforts we will be able to adopt logic and common sense (Which is uncommon) from our schools and teachers. This has been our problem (not sure whether cultural or moral) but we think to question is to insult or distrust, but I guess unless you question, your concern will not be visible to anyone and problem would go unnoticed. So as designers I think the first lesson I gave to my students was to OBSERVE and QUESTION.
Easy Demos
December 7th, 2009Demo Creator provides an easy way to create demos for your software or anything where you need to capture the activity on the screen. The best part is its easy to edit. You can zoom in into bits of your page which I think is extremely helpful. You can edit each slide individually and add or remove elements. Also, there is facility to adjust the duration or order of each element. An element could be an image or button or anything that you might want to add to enhance the look and feel of the demo.
Voice can be recorded separately and you need not narrate while you record the video, which helps in working out the video bit more effectively. I found the price to be on the higher side. But its surely value for money.
